LAFAYETTE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Cody Cousins, the man who stands accused of fatally stabbing and shooting a Purdue Student in January, has pleaded guilty to murder.

The Lafayette Journal and Courier reports that Cousins was in court Thursday morning and pleaded guilty to one count of murder. Cousins' attorney stated that he pleaded guilty without a plea deal, which leaves the door open to the "guilty but mentally ill" defense for the sentencing hearing.

Sentencing is scheduled for September 19.
