BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY (WTHR) -- A nine-year-old girl will undergo surgery Friday after she was hit by a school bus yesterday in Bartholomew County.
Investigators say a substitute bus driver accidentally ran over the girl and her six-year-old brother when they darted into the street Thursday morning.
Aiyanna Moffitt was airlifted to Riley Children's Hospital with serious injuries. Family members say she is having surgery on her broken leg and hip today.
Her brother, Brian Moffitt, was treated and released from Columbus Regional Hospital.
Feb. 27 Report
Two children were hit by a school bus near Taylorsville early Thursday morning. The children were siblings, and they attend kindergarten and second grade at the same school.
It happened on Chaucer Drive, west of US 31 and east of I-65. A nine-year-old girl was flown to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health with serious injuries, and a six-year-old boy had minor injuries. The boy was treated and released.
It's still early in the investigation, but police believe that the children may have run in front of the bus. They don't believe the driver was negligent.
Bartholomew County Deputy Chief Todd Noblitt told WTHR that it's a difficult situation for all concerned.
"I wasn't here when the accident happened. However, I think anytime children are involved, it doesn't matter who they are. When they're in distress, it hits home. I can only imagine the feelings the bus driver has. At this point we don't have any reason to believe the bus driver acted negligent in any way, however we are conducting our investigation to determine what happened at why it happened," he said.
Noblitt said he believes the children live in the neighborhood where the accident happened.
"We had preliminary information from an eyewitness that indicated the children may have darted in the path of the bus. That's something we will follow up on to be able to verify," he said.
Noblitt said investigators will start to put together a report by Thursday afternoon.
