FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Early Sunday morning, officers responded to a call in the 3400 block of Euclid Ave. and discovered that a young child had been shot in the leg, while asleep in bed.
According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, the 7-year-old girl was asleep when bullets entered from outside the house and struck the child in the leg. Officers were able to identify two gunshot wounds, one to the bottom of the foot and the other near the knee.
The 7-year-old was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, in serious condition. Officials say she's expected to make a full recovery.
Officers found nearly 20 casings outside the house while investigating the scene and concluded that a gun battle had taken place outside the residence.
But her home, wasn't the only on Euclid Ave. to be riddled with bullet holes. Neighbors tell 21Alive, evidence of the violence can be seen on several homes.
Mike Joyner with the Fort Wayne Police Department says the investigation is still ongoing and they can use the public's help - searching for suspects.
