ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (21Alive) -- An off-road accident has left one man dead in rural Allen County.

County dispatchers say it happened Monday just before 10 p.m. near the Huntington County line. Emergency crews were called to reports of a vehicle leaving the road in the 13000 block of Neahlongquah near Aboite and Ernst roads.

According to the Allen County Sheriff's Department, four people were off-roading on nearby trails in a Jeep. The driver was apparently trying to navigate a steep hill when the vehicle overturned, pinning one of the passengers, 52-year-old David Hitzfield.

Hitzfield was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two passengers and driver suffered minor injuries.

According to the Allen County Coroner, Hitzfield was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. This is the 26th traffic fatality for Fort Wayne and Allen County in 2013.
