CVS Cuts Off Access To Painkillers For 36 Doctors

August 22, 2013 Updated Aug 22, 2013 at 3:11 PM EDT

UNITED STATES (21Alive) -- CVS has cut off more than three dozen doctors and other healthcare providers after they were prescribing painkillers at an alarmingly high rate.

CVS analyzed the prescribing habits of nearly one million providers and compared them to other doctors in their specialty and region.

They found more than 36 doctors and other healthcare providers were writing prescriptions for drugs like oxycodone and hydrocodone significantly more often than others. For example, one preventative medicine doctor had issued over 40,000 doses of the high-risk drugs, compared to the 600 doses ordered by other doctors in their field.
