FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Birkmeier & Sons Monument Company, located just feet from Momper Insulation, re-opened its doors Tuesday after Sunday’s huge blaze at Momper Insulation.
Birkmeier & Sons’ building was unaffected from the fire and none of the inventory was affected including finished monuments.
Birkmeier was not open Sunday as part of their normal schedule, but decided to remain closed Monday after speaking with members of the Fort Wayne Fire Department and Fort Wayne Police Department after a bit of smoke traveled into their building. Both fire and police officials have warned area businesses and residents about the possible toxic dangers associated with the smoke from Momper Insualtion.
Birkmeier manager Lisa Scheurich says despite the fact that much of Main St. remains closed, customers can still get access to the store.
“It'll be great when Main St. opens so people can get to us. Right now, there's a misconception that they can't get to us because of the road closure but the road is open to our building.”
Birkmeier has been creating monuments and memorials in Fort Wayne since 1880.
