AVILLA, Ind. (21Alive) -- A 24-year-old Avilla man was injured early Friday morning after the vehicle he was driving was involved in a crash with an Indiana State Police SUV driven by an off-duty trooper.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Friday at approximately 7:35 a.m., First Sergeant R. Corey Culler, 44, from Kendallville, was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe southbound on CR 100 E (Miner Road) south of CR 200 N.

According to police reports, as Culler approached the intersection with Sycamore Way, a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Dennis Dancer, 24, pulled into the intersection from Sycamore Way and into Culler's path.

Police say that Culler braked and tried to steer away but still struck the Grand Prix along the driver's side. Both Culler and his young daughter, who was in a child restraint seat in the back seat, were properly belted and did not suffer any injuries.

Dancer was also seat belted but suffered head and internal injuries and was taken to a local hospital. His condition is not known at this time.
