FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Governor Mike Pence announced that Allen County has been selected as one of the counties that will take part in a pilot pre-K program.

The program is designed to give low-income 4-year-olds access to early learning opportunities by using existing state/federal funding. The pilot program is to study the effectiveness of pre-K helping to better prepare impoverished children for kindergarten and beyond.

Money will go towards programs delivered by private schools, public schools, and community based early education providers who meet certain criteria.

The United Way of Allen County announced that they would be one of 15 community organizations that would be implementing a program starting in 2015.
