DECATUR, Ind. (21Alive) – Decatur’s city council will soon consider whether to annex Adams Memorial Hospital.

What's unusual is that the hospital is the one asking to be brought into the town's fold.

Built in 2005, Adams Memorial is already hooked up to city water and sewer lines.

But being outside the city limits, it pays more for the services.

After crunching the numbers, the hospital's board of trustees unanimously voted to ask for its 140 acre campus to be included within the city's boundaries, meaning a monthly savings of more than $5,000 in water fees alone.

"One of our values is to be good stewards of our resources and to always look at cost-saving measures for our community and for our patients. And so this will do that for you? Yes. This will provide significant savings for us. We'll be partners with the city. It will be a win-win situation for both of us," says Susan Sefton from Adams Memorial.

Mayor John Schultz agrees, saying the voluntary annexation offer would allow the city to broaden its reach even beyond that.

"We're always open to expanding our borders. Right now we're kind of blocked from future development because the hospital's in the way. It kind of adjoins the river, so we are naturally blocked from any annexation. So I think it's a good thing for Decatur. We expand our boundaries. We bring in a few people from the retirement center that's out there called Woodcrest.," Schultz says.

He says city council still needs to have public hearings and craft resolutions.

He expects the deal to be finalized in about six months.
