FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – Allen County Public Library officials suspected their app for smart phones would be popular, but ACPL mobile is growing far beyond expectations.

Library officials say the free app has been downloaded 17,000 times since it was launched in 2012, and those who download it are using it—a lot!

Officials claim more than 23 percent of the holds and 30 percent of renewals placed on books during December were done through the app.

"With weather like this of course we all appreciate not having to go out, although we love to see people come to the library but, this app allows you to do an awful lot of things without going out in the cold,” said Jeff Krull, ACPL Director. “You can renew your items, you can look things up, you can place them on hold, you can check library locations.”

Krull says the app was developed in-house after outside firms wanted too much money.
