FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - This week, get to know some of the candidates looking for your vote, Primary Election Day.
We sent a request to some candidates asking each to let us know their top three issues.
This time, we hear from the two Democrats who want to be the third district Congressman.
The top issue for Democrat, Thomas Hayhurst?
He says, "We must nurture a strong economy and an attractive quality of life and level the playing field when trading abroad in order to safeguard American jobs.
We need to provide incentives and tax cuts for companies that stay in the united states and create jobs for American workers.
Education is the key to achieving the American Dream."
He says, "Working to ensure the well-being of my patients has convinced me that every citizen of our great country deserves access to affordable health care.
I believe we should actively support negotiations with drug companies to secure the highest-quality, lowest-cost medications for millions of seniors on medicare.
Too many people are forced to make the unthinkable choice between their food and medicine."
He says, "For many years, our nation has made deep cuts into the care we provide our veterans, and this is unacceptable.
We are waging a war on the home front for those forgotten by the Federal Government. We are pressing for action even as new veterans return home from the front lines with long-term needs."
The top issue for Democrat Thomas Schrader?
He says, "Government must provide hope to people.
I make a pledge never to raise your taxes.
My opponent has voted many times to raise taxes.
He was always a big supporter of annexation.
He voted for the smoking ban costing hundreds of restaurant jobs and causing many bars to close, costing the city thousands in tax revenues.
I'm for people keeping their jobs and self-respect... not taxing them to death."
He says... "I'm against abortion.
Life begins at conception.
I will spend every waking moment to ensure abortion and Roe versus Wade are overturned.
Being a doctor, Hayhurst should know better. As a human being, I don't think he should approve of the slaughtering of human lives."
My pledge is to the veterans of the 3rd district... to respect them and their service to our nation with continued good health care and an increase in benefits.
With a war raging, we must protect those who have protected us.
We owe them, and our veterans are entitled to no less."
Next, hear from four of the five Republicans running for Senator Evan Bayh's seat.
