INDIANA (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The way people watch movies is rapidly changing, and those changes could be threatening the future of traditional video rental stores. There are more options than ever, and that means more competition.
A Blockbuster Video store in Fort Wayne that is closing their doors is just one of several struggling video stores across the country. The Huntington Movie Gallery, for example, is also closing.
Netflix delivers movies to your door with no late fees. Red Box offers you a new release that can be returned at any Red Box location for only one dollar per night. On Demand services mean you never have to leave your couch.
Local retailers like Stucky Brothers in Fort Wayne are seeing the effects of this change. Ed Bousma is the Sales Manager and Buyer for the appliance and electronic store. He says the industry right now is focusing on home integration.
The newest technological development that could present a new challenge for traditional video stores is called IPTV, internet provided television. It's connected wirelessly to the internet. Widgets on the screen can be used for almost anything. Bousma says, "You can just sit back and relax and say, I missed my favorite tv show last night or I missed my favorite tv show two weeks ago. I can push a button, and then I can go watch it at my convenience."
This is yet another challenge to video stores already battling Netflix, Red box, Video on Demand, and countless others, but some consumers say there are still benefits to a traditional movie store.
One Fort Wayne mother we spoke to said, "We like to be able to get it when we want it instead of ordering it and then waiting on it. I have two boys, and when they want to see a movie they want to see it now, not a week from now."
Time will tell if the video stores create a strategy that allow them to survive in an ever changing entertainment industry.
