FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Some students might rank history class as their least favorite subject. But that's not the case at Memorial Park Middle School in Fort Wayne thanks to a special teacher's passion.

The hallways at Memorial Park Middle School were lined with students who couldn't help but be excited to see Sally Butler win the Golden Apple Award.

They had just watched the surprise presentation on the school's in-house television station where Mrs. Butler was taking part in the morning announcements. Little did she know that four former students and one current one had nominated her for the honor.

Former student Destiny Brittain says, “Mrs. Butler is one of the special few teachers that can touch lives forever. She may not realize it, but she is changing the world one class at a time.”

Student Victoria Joyner says, “She really does make sure every one of her students understand what she's teaching. Mrs. Butler brings me light and excitement everyday in her class, for that I sincerely believe she deserves the Golden Apple Award.”

Award winner Sally Butler, says, “Gosh... I'm crying...this can be the most challenging job and also the most rewarding and when you can make an impact, gosh, it's priceless...so, thank you...”

Mrs. Butler has been teaching for 24 years, mostly at the middle school level. Teaching U.S. History is something she takes very seriously, spending countless hours reading and travelling to learn about things she can later share with her students.

Sally says, “It truly is a passion for me and I just care about my country and I want the kids to know their past so they can direct their futures.”

And all of these students agree their futures are that much brighter thanks to Mrs. Butler.

The Golden Apple Award honors teachers that are changing young people for the better every day, and rewards outstanding teachers and the schools that allow them to flourish. Each month Indiana's NewsCenter chooses a winner and features them in our newscasts.
