HUNTINGTON, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--The poor economy is leading to a huge jump in library use around the country. The Huntington Public Library is set to open a new addition January first and it couldn’t come at a better time. As the economy worsened and people lost jobs, they began to take advantage of all the free services libraries offer.
The Huntington library, like a lot of libraries around the country, suddenly got very busy. And not just for the free access to books and videos.
“When you have economic problems one of the first things that goes is internet access and we have high speed internet access open to everyone here,” says library director Kathy Holst. “All unemployment claims have to be done online. License plates can be renewed on line.”
Libraries across the country are reporting about a 30% increase in traffic over last year and that trend is likely to continue.
