Saint Patrick's Day Crashes: One Drunk, One Fatal

ANGOLA, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- Police reported multiple crashes and traffic stops that dampened the light-hearted Saint Patrick's Day festivities. But two particular accidents in Angola were fairly serious.

First on Saturday night, Angola police were called to West Fox Lake Road east of Golden Lake Road for car crash with injuries. Around 9:45 p.m. Chris Shackelford Jr., 24, of Angola was driving east on West Fox Lake Road from Golden Lake Road.

Police say Shackelford's car went off the north side of the road, then it slid across the road colliding with a fence and utility pole before stopping. Both Shackelford and his passenger, Laura K Howard, 25, of Angola, were trapped inside and had to be pulled out of the car by the Angola and Steuben Township Fire Departments.

Shackelford and Howard were flown to Parkview Regional Medical by Samaritan helicopter with head injuries.

Police believe alcohol was a major factor in the crash.

The second crash was early Sunday morning, also in Angola. This crash was fatal.

Around 3:40 a.m., Jason Wayne Motzer, 29, of Hamilton was driving north on State Road 127 just south of County Road 400 North. Motzer was near the Ramada Inn when his Mazda left the east side of the road, crossed all lanes of traffic and ended up in the west ditch. The Mazda hit a drainage culvert and rolled several times down the steep ditch.

Motzer was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Steuben County Coroner Rodney Snyder.
