FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - The Fort Wayne Police Department has made an arrest in a string of robberies stemming from Craigslist deals.

Tahj Thomas of Fort Wayne has been preliminarily charged with two counts of felony robbery.

Police say over the past five months, nine people were robbed--often times at gunpoint--while buying or selling electronics through Craigslist.

Thomas was found with a handgun that had the serial number removed.

He's also been preliminarily charged with possession of a handgun with an obliterated serial number, misdemeanor carrying a handgun without a license and violating terms of release from a previous robbery.

Court documents show Thomas is awaiting trial in a separate robbery case.

Authorities warn potential buyers and sellers to take precautions before meeting to make a transaction with someone like writing down serial numbers on items and doing sales in public places during the day. It is recommended you bring an extra person to the sale.

Authorities say compounding Craigslist robbery investigations is that often times cell phones are stolen, prolonging the chance to call 911. They advise taking notes of the descriptions of suspects and getaway cars.
