NEW HAVEN, Ind. (21Alive) - The New Haven Police Department is warning people of another grandchild needing help phone scam.
A couple informed police of a call from an 760 area code (Escondido, Calif.) and a person claiming to be a grandson needing help.
The caller says he was in a taxi in Mexico during spring break, the taxi was pulled over, the taxi driver had drugs in the car and the taxi driver and caller were arrested.
The caller is seeking $1,000 to be released from a Mexican jail.
The phone scam went so far as the caller handed the phone off to another person claiming to be an employee at a U.S. embassy.
The couple hung up the phone on the calls.
