AUSTIN, Texas (21Alive) - The woman killed in a crash during the South By Southwest Music Festival was originally from Northeast Indiana.
The Travis County, Texas, Medical Examiner's Office says Jamie Ranae West, 27, of Austin, Texas, was one of two people who died when a car broke through barricades into a crowd of people gathered for the concerts in downtown Austin.
21Alive has learned West, whose maiden name is Jamie Cook, was originally from Garrett, Ind. A family friend says her parents still live in Garrett.
West was on the back of a motorcycle operated by her husband, Evan West, when they were hit, according to the Austin Police Department.
Steven Gerardus Hendrikus Craenmehr, 35, of the Netherlands, was also killed.
Twenty-three other people, including Evan West, were injured. He is listed in critical condition.
Police say a drunk driver fled officers, drove the wrong day down city streets and eventually crashed his vehicle through barricades into the SXSW crowd. The driver, Rashad Charjuan Owens, 21, is preliminarily charged with 2 counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault.
