One Dead In Grant County Trench Collapse

August 14, 2013 Updated Aug 15, 2013 at 11:35 AM EST

MARION, Ind. (21Alive) - One man was killed when the walls of a trench collapsed on top of him in Marion Wednesday Night.

At around 7:15, the Grant County Sheriff's Department responded to the 800 block of W. CR406 S in Marion, where the walls of the trench had trapped Ross Hoffman, the homeowner, and a family friend, Grant County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Ewer.

Hoffman was buried up to his chest in the collapse. Ewer, who was off-duty, was buried to his waist, police say.

Emergency crews pulled both men from the trench, and took them to a hospital.

Hoffman was unresponsive when crews dug him out, and later died at the hospital.

Ewer was treated at the hospital and released.
