ANGOLA, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Bishop Luers running back/linebacker Jaylon Smith verbally committed Saturday to the University of Notre Dame.

Smith announced his intentions at the Redefining Athletic Standards Football Camp hosted by Dallas Cowboys defensive end and Fort Wayne native, Anthony Spencer.

Smith chose the Fightin' Irish over offers from Alabama, Ohio State, USC and a host of others. His brother, Rod, plays running back for the Buckeyes.

Smith is a five-star linebacker prospect, who is ranked as high as No. 4 overall in the class of 2013 by some scouting agencies.

Smith rushed for 1,389 yards and 4 touchdowns for the Knights in his junior season. On the defensive side of the ball, Smith tallied 52 tackles (18 for loss), 8 sacks, 1 interception and 1 fumble recovery.

Bishop Luers won the IHSAA 2A Football State Championship. Smith was named Indiana's NewsCenter Football Player of the Year.
