(Columbia City, IN)-A young life cut short...a loving girlfriend left to wonder what could have been...21 year old Ryan Mays died after a car accident Saturday.

Ryan's 16 year old cousin Kacie Bills was driving her Saturn westbound on Raber Road when she collided with a squad car in the opposite direction, this is where the accident reached its tragic end.

Rex Schrader’s 7 year old daughter came running into the house yelling to call 911.

Within the past two years, the Schraders say they've seen two Samaritan helicopters on their property in Columbia City--and this is another reminder of the caution drivers should use.

Police believe the speed of the Saturn may have been a factor.

Holly Schrader says officials put up sign reflectors and slow speed signs, but it’s just a dangerous curve.

Just days before he died, Ryan Mays, a religious young man with hopes of becoming a paramedic, recommended a book called “The Purpose Driven Life” to his girlfriend, Kellie Martin.

She's now reading it…hoping to find a deeper meaning to the end of her boyfriend's life.

Martin says Mays last words to her were “I love you, drive safe."

Those last words should serve as a reminder to everyone.
