Insurance companies paid nearly $400 million dollars in claims from dog bites last year. Those numbers are just one hurdle a local family has faced over the past 18 months as they've searched for a new home for their large dogs.

In June, we heard Lisa Ganaway's story of how countless insurance agents and homeowner's had hung up on her when she mentioned she had two large dogs, including an Akita named Sachi.

The Akita is listed by some companies as a "restricted dog" that they will not cover. Between the lack of liability insurance and homeowner's that wouldn't rent to dog owners, Lisa found herself with few options.

After our story aired, a number of viewers came forward looking to help the Ganaway's, but it was a home in Harlan that turned out to be the perfect fit.

"it's a dream, it feels like he was an angel and knew exactly what we needed for the dogs, it's a huge relief", said Lisa Ganaway.

That Angel, was Lonnie Norris of Granite Ridge Builders, who just happened to have a home that backs up to a farm and has a fenced in yard for Sachi and Kane. The Ganaway's say it's a perfect program that provides them with a lease-to-own option.

Lisa also found a company to offer her liability insurance, her ordeal took more than a year to solve and opened her eyes about how owning a certain breed of dog can really restrict a renter.

"be persistent and be honest about your situation and you'll find the place that works for you."
