FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- The young boy who was in critical condition over the weekend after being hit by a van in downtown Fort Wayne has had his condition upgraded. He is still hospitalized but is now in good condition.
Fort Wayne Police say that John Donnell, Jr., 11, was crossing Taylor street with his sibling when he was hit by a minivan driving through the via-duct. the driver of the minivan has not been charged. Police say neither the boy or the driver could see each other because the via-duct blocked their line of sight.
Just after 5 p.m. Saturday, the Fort Wayne Police Department released this statement:
On Saturday, 03/24/2012, at approximately 2:29 PM, a Fort Wayne Police officer was on routine patrol driving eastbound on Taylor Street. As the officer approached Fox Avenue, he observed a van was stopped in the middle of Taylor Street under the via-duct. The officer exited his squad car to further investigate. The officer learned the van had just struck a child that was attempting to cross Taylor Street.
The child was unconscious and unresponsive upon the officer’s arrival. He immediately rendered medical aid to the child and notified dispatch to contact paramedics. Paramedics arrived on scene and advised the child was in critical condition. Paramedics transported the child to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition.
Preliminary reports indicate the child was walking with a sibling northbound in the alley just east of the via-duct. The van was traveling eastbound on Taylor Street. As the children entered the roadway to cross Taylor Street, the van was exiting the via-duct. Initial reports indicate the via-duct obstructed both the children’s and driver’s view and contributed to the incident. At this time is does not appear alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in the incident.
Taylor Street remained closed to traffic while the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (F.A.C.T) investigated the incident and processed the scene. The roadway was reopened at 4:15 PM. This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
