FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- A wild ride on a Citilink bus in Fort Wayne on Monday.
An argument erupts between two passengers, with one of them suffering a knife wound.
City police say a woman pulled a knife during a dispute, but it turns out she suffered the cut, and was the one who got taken to jail.
Officers were summoned to Spy Run Avenue and Lawton Place about 10:30 Monday morning.
That’s where the driver of the bus pulled over when the commotion blew up.
29-year old Nyelah Hayes didn't like another passenger telling her she shouldn't sit on the bus.
Police say she displayed a steak knife, but she got cut as it was wrestled from her, then she got arrested.
Citilink has cameras and microphones on each bus.
Such devices recorded Monday’s dispute to help police with the investigation.
State law says if you have a valid permit, you can bring a concealed firearm on a city bus.
Other weapons, such as swords, ninja stars, battle axes and knives, are prohibited.
But officials say body searches of boarding passengers are not practical.
Ken Housden/Citilink General Manager: " When someone gets on a bus, we're not going to frisk you, you know, this is not an airport. You're not going to go through a metal detector. We provided well over two million rides last year. We couldn't provide the service if we ran everyone through a metal detector, it just wouldn't work."
The law says guns are fair game in libraries, public parks and on city buses, provided someone has a permit.
But officials are quick to point out if the gun owner takes it out of his or her pocket and waves it around in a threatening manner, the incident would be reported to police.
City bus drivers in Fort Wayne are instructed to hit a panic button on board in such circumstances, activating recording devices to document the event.
Nyelah Hayes has been preliminarily charged with disorderly conduct, attempted battery, and criminal recklessness.
There is no indication the other passenger involved will face prosecution.
