Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- Members of the Fort Wayne Plan Commission gathered Monday night for a public hearing on a proposed project that would bring Costco to Fort Wayne.
The multi-million dollar proposal would bring together Kelley Chevrolet and Costco on one property. On Monday, the project designer out of Indianapolis told commissioners that Costco and Kelley Chevrolet would like to develop 150 acres of land near I-69 and Lima Road.
The site was formerly home to the old Seyfert's Potato Chip plant. Kelley Chevrolet would move their East State Blvd. dealership next to Costco, right off the exit ramp. Costco would be located closer to Progress Road and Lima Road, but the two companies would share signage.
The proposal did not include the number of jobs possibly created by the project, but does call for a new public roadway and sidewalks to run through the area.
Kelley Chevrolet, says the designer, is ready to begin construction now. They could be finished as early as this summer. Costco would begin work late this year or early next year and finish up in November 2013.
There was no opposition at Monday's meeting, but Fort Wayne City Council President Tom Smith was there to voice his support.
"It's so great to have Costco coming to Fort Wayne, and I can't imagine there would be any impediments put in their way. This will be a great addition, not only to Fort Wayne, but to all of Northeast Indiana. It really says a lot that they have chosen Fort Wayne to come to."
It's possible a recent flood mitigation project in the area helped convince Costco to invest in the project.
Costco, similar to Sam's Club, is known for its wide selection of bulk items, furniture, groceries, electronics and more.
The Plan Commission will meet again next Monday to discuss a possible recommendation to City Council.
