FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Police surrounded an apartment on the city's south side for 3 hours working to coax a man to surrender.

Officials say the situation began around 11:30 Wednesday night when police went to 46 year old Lewis Reith's apartment on Bluffton Road on a disturbance call.

Reith refused to come out of his home and said he had a gun. That drew EST & CRT officers to the scene.

Police say Reith ignored efforts by negotiators to talk to police on the phone. Eventually officers fired tear gas into the apartment.

Reith surrendered peacefully around 2:30 this morning. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Police and prosecutors are investigating the incident.
