FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - Friday is "Forward Friday", a reminder to keep your Eyes Forward when behind the wheel. We've partnered up with Lutheran Health Network, Lucky Harley-Davidson, and the Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana to remind you to ignore those texts and other distractions while driving. Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person's attention away from the primary task of driving. All distractions endanger driver, passenger, and bystander safety.
“Distracted driving comes in all shapes and forms – from fiddling with the radio or GPS to personal grooming, reading and eating,” said Joe Dorko, Chief Executive Officer, Lutheran Health Network. “We believe the :fwd campaign has the potential to drive home the message that participation in any attention-stealing activity while behind the wheel can lead to a lifetime of heartache. Our trauma centers see firsthand the dangerous, sometimes deadly impact of a distracted driver, but this outcome is preventable if we all do our part.”
The NHTSA states that there are three main types of distractions:
1. Manual: Taking your hands off of the wheel.
2. Visual: Taking your eyes off of the road.
3. Cognitive: Taking your mind off of the road.
:fwd (Eyes Forward) is designed to bring awareness to the dangers of inattentive driving in our community and encourage participation in a voluntary promise to avoid dangerous driving practices while behind the wheel.
