FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Firehouse Subs, a new restaurant in Fort Wayne, opened its doors Monday night to honor local firefighters and first responders.

Firehouse Subs held a special “VIP Night” to honor special guests, Company 17 from the Fort Wayne Fire Department (FWFD) and other first responders. Local firefighters and Fire Chief Pete Kelly, were in attendance.

Guests were given free food and drinks, and firefighters checked out a new mural, dedicated to them, featuring their engine number along with Johnny Appleseed and the TinCaps with Parkview Field in the background.

Bob Filipucci, Co-Owner, said it's important to support those who serve our community.

“Our local firefighters and our local first responders are the ones who take care of us and it’s very important for us to have a great relationship with them,” Filipucci said. “It’s important to have a restaurant that’s a part of the community involved with the community.”

Guests were encouraged to make donations to the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, a foundation dedicated to improving the life-saving capabilities of emergency services in the communities served by the franchise. All donations collected Monday night will go to FWFD and other emergency services in the area.

“That’s what we’re here in Fort Wayne to do. We are from Fort Wayne and we want to be a part of that community,” Filipucci said.

Firehouse Subs is owned by Fort Wayne locals, Filipucci and Dean Cutshall. They’re not firefighters, but the men who founded the franchise were firefighters in their hometown of Jacksonville, Fla. That’s why the chain restaurant is dedicated to supporting local heroes.

Filipucci and Cutshall discovered Firehouse Subs while working on a project in Florida. Filipucci said they loved the place so much they were inspired to open their own in Fort Wayne.

“To be totally honest, my partner in this project, he didn’t even like subs when this all began,” laughed Filipucci. “Next thing you know we’re in there three times a week having lunch and it all stemmed from that.”

Firehouse Subs will host its grand opening to the public on Nov. 15 at 10:30 a.m. It’s located at 5215 Illinois Road in Fort Wayne in the Jefferson Pointe area next to Preferred Auto Sales. Filipucci said several other Firehouse Subs will be opening in the Fort Wayne area soon.
