FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – The Fort Wayne Fire Department held its Annual Service Awards.
A dozen citizens and Fort Wayne firefighters were awarded for their heroic acts in saving lives or assisting in saving lives during emergency situations at the Public Safety Academy Wednesday night.
Private Eric Zeiger is just one of the firefighters honored at the Annual FWFD Service Awards.
Zeiger was driving the ambulance that was shot 17 times last summer, and on the night he is honored he reflects back on the incident.
“When it was happening I really didn't even know what was going on until the medic had said that they're shooting at us. Then at that time everything kind of made sense and I knew what was happening at that time, and I just basically tried not to get shot,” he said.
Zeiger was given the Firefighter Meritorious Award, and it’s his first honor with the department.
“It makes me very proud but it’s all part of the duty, what I signed up to do for the citizens of Fort Wayne. It’s an honor,” he said humbly.
Nine of the dozen people honored Wednesday night were citizens whose actions saved others.
