WELLS COUNTY, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) -- After being worked on for seven years, a Civil War cannon is back at the Wells County Courthouse.
An event filled with pomp and circumstance welcomed the retired weapon back. The cannon was used in the battle of Gettysburg and brought to be displayed in Indiana, fifty years ago.
After fundraising and work, the cannon looks as good as new with all original parts, short of the wood surrounding it.
Kash Vanover from American Legion Post 111 says, “It's part of our history. It was used in the Civil War, where we lost six hundred thousand people, which is more than World War Two, and we hope that it will never again be used against Americans."
The cannon on display fired the first Union shot at Gettysburg during the Civil War.
