LEESBURG, Va. (www.nbc33.com) -- As lawmakers continue to battle over gun control, in one northern Virginia suburb a local business owner is cashing in.
It's like happy hour with added firepower: "Open Carry Wednesday" at the Cajun Experience, in Leesburg means patrons who pack heat get a 10% break on their bill.
Owner Bryan Crosswhite says it's less about the discount and more about the statement.
“It's not about packing heat,” Crosswhite tells NBC. “We are sending a message that this is America and this is our constitutional right."
Crosswhite says it was patrons who came up with the idea for the promotion. This is week four and there's been no incident yet.
Diners, including some with their children, appreciate the deal and the message. Some even stating they feel like on that evening, they are in the safest place in America.
While it’s perfectly legal to openly carry guns in Virginia, some in Leesburg are leery of the dining discount. Dissenters say that since diners are hunting for their food, they have no need to bring arms into the restaurant. The police chief agrees, especially since the restaurant also serves beer and wine.
The owner insists that anyone carrying and over imbibing will be cut off.
