FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) – Thursday’s wintery weather has caused many roadways to become surprisingly messy. An accident at Hillegas and State shut down Hillegas, backing up traffic for miles.

The accident occurred just before 11:30am when a semi rear-ended a garbage truck that had stopped for an emergency vehicle.

The front end of the semi was smashed so severely, the driver was pinned inside. Once firefighters freed the driver, he was treated at the scene. No major injuries were reported.

According to the Sheriff's office, the accident resulted from a combination of the snow fall and poor driving.

"Road conditions were a big factor in this, and the emergency run made these other people trying to yield to it,” says Lt. Guy Griffith with the Allen County Sheriff’s office. “This driver wasn't able to stop in time for the officer making the emergency run through this intersection."

A secondary accident occurred shortly after once officers opened the southbound lane of traffic. No injuries were reported in that crash.

Police officers are asking drivers to slow down and adjust to road conditions.
