MOSCOW, Russ. (NBC33) -- 14 people are dead following a suicide bombing on a railway station in Volgograd, Russia this morning, according to NBCNews.
Today's attack is the second in three days as Russia prepares itself to host the Winter Olympics in a matter of weeks. According to Russia's National Anti-Terrorist Committee, the attack on the railway station was an act of terror and that an investigation is underway.
Along with the 14 deaths, Officials are saying around 50 additional victims were injured during the bombing.
"Today at around 1300 (1 p.m.) an unconfirmed explosive device was detonated in front of the metal detector at the entrance to the train station in Volgograd,” the National Anti-Terrorist Committee said on its website. “The preliminary findings show that it was activated by a female suicide bomber."
Today's attack only heightens concerns over security for the Sochi Winter Olympic Games, which are set to begin in a little over a month. Some security analysts have pointed out that this attack may be an attempt to distract authorities from keeping the Sochi games safe.
“This tactic worked before. Prior to the Beslan school siege there were two explosions of planes and one in the Moscow metro - it was done especially to distract attention, so the terrorists could prepare the big act." Said, Andrei Soldatov, a Russian security analyst
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered law enforcement agencies to take all necessary precautions to ensure security.
