FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) – Temperatures are plummeting in the Summit City into the teens, so there is no better time than now to get your car or truck ready for winter. Before you get under the hood or take your vehicle to the body shop there are a few things you can do yourself to prep for the snow.

One thing is checking the quality of your tires. You want to make sure you have plenty of tread to grip the icy roads.

“You can have the best brakes and the best steering in the world, but if the tires are losing traction on the pavement it doesn't do you any good," says Richard Fox, the owner and President of Fox and Fox.

It is also important to check fluid levels. Transmission fluid, windshield wiper fluid, and anti-freeze can be key to getting through this winter comfortably.

In the event you ever get stranded, Fox says it can also be good to carry a "winter goody bag.”

"If it's slippery and you can't get traction, kitty litter really helps. You should carry a set of jumper cables in the event your battery does go low, or it's really cold and you can't crank it over. Jumper cables - any passerby can help you get going. Also recommend a little butane lighter. If your locks do freeze and you need to get (the doors) open you can heat your key up and stick the key in the lock."

A word of caution: only heat the key, not the car door.

Another word of caution, seat warmers should only be used sparingly when the car is first started. And never use your wiper blades in place of scrapers to remove ice. Both can do more harm than good to your car.
