FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.nbc33.com) – A man is dead and another in custody after a Tuesday afternoon shooting in broad daylight on the city's south side.
Gerelle R. Borum, 22, of Fort Wayne, was shot near the intersection of Rudisill Boulevard and Indiana Avenue just after 1:00.
Witnesses tell Fort Wayne police they saw a red and white colored truck flee from the area. Police say the truck was found about a mile away from the crime scene.
Police arrested the driver of the truck, Josiah C. Thomas, 22, of Fort Wayne, on a preliminary murder charge.
Those who live nearby are shocked to see this happen in their neighborhood.
"It was scary. I wasn't sure that it was gunshots at first because we don't really hear gunshots around here,” said a witness that asked to remain anonymous. “Once I started getting all these texts, are you ok and I saw all the cop cars, I realized those were gunshots.”
Police say they are very thankful so many witnesses called police to tell them what they saw and what they heard.
“We had witnesses that got good visuals on our suspect vehicle, the suspect vehicle as it fled. They gave us a direction of travel, provided us with a good description. That is valuable information,” said Officer Raquel Foster with the Fort Wayne Police Department.
It’s the fourth shooting Fort Wayne has seen in the past week and police are still investigating what exactly happened at the intersection.
