SOUTH CAROLINA (www.nbc33.com) – A new program is allowing some medically homebound students to attend class, using robots.
One young girl in South Carolina controls a 4.5-foot robot that takes her place at school every day.
No one would deny that Hazel Grace Kolb and Lexie Kinder are best friends. Their desks sit side-by-side in the third-grad classroom but lately Lexie’s desk has been empty.
Until last week when Verizon’s VGo remote telepresence system that gives medically homebound students came to Lexie’s aid. Lexie had opted to personalize the 4.5-foot robot with bandages that once covered her pic line.
The system may not be for every student but it does provide the school experience for students who can’t attend.
Lexie can use the internet to drive to her desk, down crowded hallways to lunch and interact with fellow students academically and socially.
And Hazel is glad to finally have her friend back.
