BLUFFTON, Ind. (NBC 33) – It's been a rough start to the school year for Bluffton, and the community is using the bad to channel some good.

With hearts and minds open, the community of Bluffton showed an outpouring of support for the Bluffton-Harrison Metropolitan School District.

Multiple pastors throughout Wells County organized a prayer vigil Tuesday night to lift up a community dealing with two tragic incidents.

"We care about the schools and we know that prayer is the first course whenever we're concerned about the schools and we know that God hears our prayers and answers them even when we don't see that,” said Rhonda McFarren.

One incident was the hospitalization of Bluffton High School Athletic Director Steve Thompson, who was hit by a car driven by Principal Steve Baker August 7.

The other – assistant football coach Joshua Clark who resigned August 22 and has been arrested for having a sexual relationship with a student.

Principal Baker and Superintendent Wayne Barker were there, and say there are other things to pray about than just those incidents.

"I don't mean to minimize those at all, but we have a lot of issues in our schools everywhere, that's not just inclusive to Bluffton, it's a bigger issue,” said Superintendent Barker.

At the Wells County Youth For Christ Center there were no candles, no choir, no formal setting, just a group of people who decided to come together to lift up their community.

"It's just amazing to see how many solid Christian people are in really good leadership positions and know that the school's being prayed for,” said Gary McFarren a former educator.

Superintendent Barker says Joshua Clark has made an initial court appearance.

As for athletic director Steve Thompson, Barker says, “For people who know that the position he was in back to August 7th and that night, throughout that night, just to see where he is now it's nothing short of a miracle. It's more evidence to the power of prayer."
