FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.nbc33.com) – The streak of nice weather has led many to get out and work on the yard, or at least pay someone else to do it. Despite all the rain we've had lately, landscaping businesses seems to be climbing back from last year’s drought.

Yet the beginning of the landscaping season didn’t seem to start out that way when the Fort Wayne area got hit with almost too much rain, causing a number of industries – such as farming, construction, and landscaping – to get a late start. The opposite held true last year when drought-like conditions made it very difficult for grasses and vegetation to grow, thus ruining the season for landscapers.

And yet weather is only one factor in the success of a landscaping company. Another more obvious factor is the economy. The good news however is that things appear to be picking up substantially in 2013.

"This year is just crazy. We've had such an influx of phone calls here recently that we've actually had to hire a part-time person just to answer the phones,” says Mark Nolot, owner of Vision Scapes Lawn and Landscape. “So it's completely night and day difference as compared to last year."

One area landscaping companies like Vision Scapes have been seeing an increase in business is in bigger projects like yard restorations and “hard-scaping,” which refers to projects like large stone retaining walls or outdoor living space like new patios and decks.

"The quality of jobs have really gone up quite a bit where people really are loosening up their checkbooks and people are spending money,” added Nolot. “Things are popping up again in Fort Wayne with some new industry that's came here. Things are moving again."

The trend right now seems to be patio projects that include built-in grills and benches as well as fire pits made of stone. Just some ways people are enjoying a little R&R in the comfort of their own home.
