FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) - Administrators at IPFW are faced with tough decisions as their operating contract deadline with Purdue University approaches.

IPFW is governed by Purdue University, so any decisions regarding administration and prioritization of state-funded capital projects is decided by Purdue officials. The deal outlining this arrangement, however is set to expire June 30th.

If a deal is not reached by both schools by that time, IPFW would then operate as an independent university.

Some current students are not completely sold on this new idea.

"I wanted to transfer to IPFW because the Purdue name carries a lot more weight," says Jamison Law, an IPFW junior who transferred from Malone University in Canton, OH. "So if this is going to happen and they lose that Purdue name, I think they'll end up losing a lot of students."

Chasity Jones, a sophomore at IPFW is not so sure it would be a bad idea.

"I still think it'll be credible. This is a great school and everyone in Indiana knows that. So I'm sure their credibility will not exactly stay the same, but it will still be there."

Meanwhile Nikki Jordan, a sophomore at IPFW says she would be extremely disappointed.

"I came to IPFW for the degree from Purdue. So if they cancel that, I'm going to get a degree from 'Fort Wayne University,' or whatever they call it. That's not legitimate. So now I have to consider moving universities to get a degree from a well-established place. And that makes me really mad."

IPFW officials are considering a study which would look at the school's governance structure to see whether establishing itself as an independent university is plausible.
