Consumer Tracking In A Digital World (VIDEO)

UNITED STATES (NBC33) -- Searching for a product online can sometimes mean that same product will pop up again and again as you visit other websites, like a salesman that won't take no for an answer.

"It kind of irritates me to be tracked in that way," Michelle Dennedy from Mcafee said and she knows the experience well.

According to a recent Pew Report, six out of 10 internet users said they observed targeted advertising while surfing the web.

"There's no free lunch, so all these free services we love to use online... It's all paid for, just not by you directly," Dennedy said.

Some consumers actually prefer personalized ads, but for those who don't, there is a way around it.

"You should be clearing the cookies out of your cache on your browser it makes your system more secure but it also means you're going to have to re-enter your password. It's a trade-off and its one that I'm willing to make to have a little more security and a little less of that creep factor," Dennedy said.

Dennedy says using the highest privacy settings on some search engines like Blekko, will keep your IP address from being collected.

You can also "human hack", that is, search for things that aren't relevant to you to throw off advertisers.

But in the digital age, consumer tracking is almost inevitable.

"Using this free service don't ever think that you are the customer... consider yourself the inventory."
