DECATUR, Ind. (NBC33) - Adams County officials are asking their residents to do what they can right now to prepare for the inevitable flooding that will soon come.

For residents living in flood plains near the St. Mary's River this is nothing new, but administrators with the Adams County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) are still advising residents to stock up on sand bags now, before it is too late.

Until just recently, sand bag supplies were limited as a large amount of sand set aside for flood bagging had frozen. Thanks to the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department, however, those supplies have been thawed and are ready for distribution.

"There was some issues with bags in the first load that we picked up," says Fire Chief Russell Cook. "We brought it into the station on a trailer and let it temper a little bit to where it was a little more workable."

The Adams County EMA says the problem has been addressed, and adequate supplies will be ready for those in need.

"We are low on filled sand bags, so we are providing bags, ties, and of course the sand itself in several locations around the county where people can come and bag their own sand bags," says Adams County EMA director John August. "We furnish the bags and the sand."

As Chief Cooks points out, residents simply need to plan ahead.

"We're hoping that the people that are able to help themselves, plan a little bit ahead. Come and bag your bags. If we run out of this pile of sand we can acquire more. It is important if you can get ahead of this game right now because we've had a record snow fall, there's rain coming. We will have some issues here."

There are two locations in Adams County where free sand can be picked up for bagging. The Adams County Solid Waste District in Decatur is open Monday through Friday while the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department at 335 Tower Drive has pick-up available 24 hours a day.
