OHIO (NBC33) -- Authorities found a huge number of dogs, packed like sardines in a minivan parked in a hotel parking lot.

Animal welfare agents say they couldn't believe the dogs had been packed so tightly.

The dog breeder from Country Boys Pets told humane society workers that he was on his way from Indiana to New Jersey to drop those dogs off at an animal rescue. For hours they traveled 4 to 5 dogs per crate, 50 dogs and 12 puppies, some just a few weeks old.

"They were stuffed from the bottom to the top. By the time we got them into our care it had almost been 24 hours that they had been in the van," Lori Carlson said.

And it would have been longer but the minivan broke down in Licking County and a hotel worker called authorities.

"In one kennel alone was a Caviler Charles Spaniel, a Rotweiler, a Lab and then another large dog," Paula Evans added.

Some of the dogs had cuts, scratches, were covered in feces and urine and one had pneumonia.

The Licking County dog shelter, already filled, created a makeshift kennel to feed and care for the dogs. But community members are dropping off donations of small breed dog food and puppy pads to try and help.

Humane society workers say there is still one dog unaccounted for. They are searching for a black and tan Shepard they say may have been tossed out along I-70. They're asking any drivers in this area to keep an eye out for that possibly injured dog.
