FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.nbc33.com) - Hundreds of local job seekers flocked to the Fort Wayne Urban League job fair on Hanna Street Thursday with resumes in-hand. And they weren't alone as nearly a dozen employers were waiting with roughly a hundred jobs to fill.
Some big-time employers like Wal-mart, Cintas, as well as both Parkview and Lutheran Hospitals were on hand accepting resumes for jobs of all sorts, talking with the interested applicants.
Urban League CEO Jonathan C. Ray seemed pleased with everybody who showed up, saying despite the long lines and steamy hot temperatures everyone was on their best behavior and was dressed to impress.
"With that many people you do have to stand and wait and we have not had anything but positive feedback."
Some of the applicants were equally impressed with the event, making today out to be a huge success.
"It was actually better than what I expected," said job seeker Ja'La Franklin. "I thought it was gonna be like out(doors) and there's going to be people everywhere, it's going to be all scattered around but it was like assembly lines."
D.J. Moore, another potential job seeker agreed, pointing out that job fairs like this make it easier to find work at multiple locations.
"I figured there should be a lot of job opportunities here. Instead of going to each individual store and ask for the manager you can just talk to people... which was nice."
Alan Grinsfelder, a recruiter for the Thurgood Marshall Leadership Academy was very impressed with the diversity and professionalism of the applicants.
"I think a lot of the people that are coming in have good speaking skills and seem really interested. They are all ages, it's a diverse group and I think this has been a great opportunity."
The concept was simple, after signing in each applicant walked through the lines of booths where they could speak with a few representatives from each company about their potential job openings. Most employers provided information on how to apply online, encouraging everyone to fill out some personal information to find jobs that suits their desires and expertise.
In all, an estimated crowd between 600 and 700 showed up to the fair.
