FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) - Pet health and safety is a top priority for us here at NBC33. Recently, Scoop the NBC33 dog went in for his first check-up with Dr. Sunil Gupta and the friendly folks at the Aboite Animal Clinic on Covington Road.
Scoop was given the full physical, tipping the scales at 27 pounds which Dr. Gupta says is slightly overweight.
"Dogs are guilty in my opinion in terms of eating food or things that are not food-related. So you basically have to puppy-proof the house or puppy-proof to make sure the dogs don't get into any inedible objects."
The good news is, Dr. Gupta's treatment plan is simple.
"Feed him less, that's the first thing you have to do. And typically it's hard, basically the treats add up a lot of calories. So we need to find out who is giving and how many treats he is getting per day. If we need to, we can change the food and the diet and go to specific diet foods that are indicated for weight loss."
Having your pet seen regularly by a veterinarian is crucial towards their overall health. In a routine physical, they can have their teeth, eyes, and ears looked at as well as be checked for heart worms or any kind of skin abnormalities that could lead to further health risks.
"The latest recommendation is to maybe have the pet seen twice a year for their physical exam, unless there is something obviously comes up - pet is not feeling good or anything like that - then if it's indicated where it needs to be brought in and seen then that's definitely fine with that part of it. "
With a little diet and exercise Scoop should be in peak physical shape in no time!
