FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) - Historically Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is known nationally as a day of service where members of the community take some time to give back.

That is exactly what the South Side Lady Archers' basketball team did Monday afternoon.

The ladies were tasked with cleaning and sorting shelves of towels and bed sheets at the Mustard Seed Furniture Bank. But they were not alone - numerous organizations like Mustard Seed rely on the help on days like MLK Day.

"It doesn't matter what day it is, it can be Martin Luther King Day, it can be spring break, it can be a summer break the Mustard Seed thrives on the use of volunteers," says Suzie Jordan, Executive Director at Mustard Seed. "Because we have a small staff but we touch so many lives in our own community."

And the girls on the team were happy to get involved.

"Volunteering our time and doing the right thing is always good, we like to help other people," says Maria Moore, a junior point guard for the Lady Archers. "And to get together as a team it's building chemistry and more bonding through the team."

Similar organizations around the area saw an increase in the number of volunteers because of today's holiday.
