FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – Part of Maplecrest Road is being expanded this year from two lanes to four, and a local elementary school will be affected.

Haley Elementary School, in the Fort Wayne Community Schools (FWCS) district, is located along Maplecrest Road.

For the expansion, the City of Fort Wayne will purchase 35 ft. of property in front of the school for $24, 215.

FWCS officials say they'll have to move the school’s sign, but otherwise students and families shouldn't be impacted.

“That should help our parents and our teachers and other who have to get to the school too, to have easier access to the building. So I think our families will benefit from the project, so we get to benefit twice with ease of getting to the school as well as the financial reward that we got for it,” said Kathy Friend, Chief Financial Officer for FWCS.

Friend says the money received from the city will go toward the district's general fund.

Construction on the project could begin later this year.
