FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) – Whether it is the proximity of Thanksgiving and Christmas on the calendar, or the fear of the frigid cold donations for a number of area charities are in short supply in 2013.

Money collected by bell ringers for the Salvation Army and winter coat drives supporting "Coats for Kids" are not quite hitting their goals this year. In fact, already half-way through their collection season, the Salvation Army has only hit about 30% of its goal of $265,000.

The same goes for the "Coats for Kids" drive, which collected a little over 1,500 coats – well below their goal of just under 1,900 coats.

"Sometimes weather plays a factor, if it gets a little too wet people won't stop, if it gets too cold or windy they won't stop,” points out Major Harold Poff with the Salvation Army. “Partly it's calendar. (With) Thanksgiving being later this year, we're not able to start ringing in some locations until Black Friday, so that makes a shorter season at those locations."

The “Coats for Kids” drive saw a similar struggle with the weather, but for a different reason.

"The needs seems to be slow because it was warm and people didn't really think about giving coats,” says Jean Joley, the Executive Director of “Coats for Kids. “Teachers didn't really identify the kids who needed coats until these terrible frigid last weeks. But we'll get it done."

Although the “Coats for Kids” drive has already ended, they will still accept cash and coat donations. Both can be dropped off at the Volunteer Center at 3401 Lake Avenue.

Salvation Army will also continue their bell ringing outside a number of locations across the city including Hobby Lobby, Walgreens, and Kroger retail stores through December 24th.
