FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) – The mission of the Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health is to educate restaurant owners while protecting the public.

The department showed one way they do that this past Tuesday after closing the Hibachi Grill at Coldwater Crossing due to a complaint of live cockroaches.

Once a complaint is made, teams of investigators takes any and all necessary precautions – even shutting down a restaurant if needed.

"Closures aren't something we do every day, but it's not uncommon for facilities to close. And reopening of that facility is very specific to the nature of why they were closed. Sometimes it's a quick turn-around time, sometimes it does take a little bit longer. It always depends on the situation."

When that happens, the restaurants cannot reopen for business until they meet objectives set up by the Department of Health.

"They have to complete all necessary tasks, whether that is cleaning, whether that is getting professional pest control services in there, whether that is fixing anything that is structural that's attributing to the pest control issue - or could potentially be contributing to it. Those are the things that we would want to have remedied to fix the problem and then we of course follow-up to ensure that it remains corrected."

The Hibachi Grill was able to re-open on Thursday once pest control measures were taken.

Friday afternoon the Health Department closed another restaurant, Koto Japanese Steak House and Sushi at 301 East Washington Center Road for a similar complaint of cockroaches.
