FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.nbc33.com) – There are only a few days left in the academic school year for most districts and once schools close down their doors for the summer, so do the meal plans many students rely on. Because of this, some families in Fort Wayne are struggling with where their next meal may come from.
Well not any more thanks to organizations like the Community Harvest Food Bank and Fort Wayne Community Schools.
Organizers for the Free Summer Meals program are offering lunch - and sometimes afternoon snacks - to kids ages 1 through 18 years of age who are in need. The food is nutritious, and most importantly free of charge. All you have to do is show up to one of the many locations around town, and no prior registration is needed.
"It gives kids an opportunity to get out to go get a healthy meal,” says Krista Stockman with Fort Wayne Community Schools. “They can go every day if they want, there are locations throughout the city. And that way we know that students are still getting healthy meals throughout the summer when they're not in school."
For the complete list of locations be sure to visit the FWCS website. There you will also find meal times and menus.
As Jane Avery, Executive Director at Community Harvest Food bank points out, while the program is geared towards families in need, it is really about keeping our city's kids safe and well-fed.
"These are kids, and they are hungry and they come to a safe site, and we are just delighted that more organizations are getting involved with it so that kids can have a good, happy, healthy summer."
Meals will be offered between Monday June 10th and Friday August 2nd and will be served on a first-come, first-serve basis. Times vary by location.
Of course the food will be nutritious in nature and will vary from location to location. In some cases it will be very similar to what students have grown to expect for a school lunch at FWCS schools. Other locations will have food provided by the Community Harvest Food Bank.
