FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) – Despite travel advisories in a number of surrounding counties, drivers all over tried braving the snow and winds only to end up stranded or in a ditch.

Slide-offs have been getting so bad in fact, that most tow truck companies around Fort Wayne are only responding to emergency calls from city, county, and state police.

Over the weekend, Parker Services says they responded to 80 runs on Saturday, 70 more on Sunday, and as of noon Monday they already made 60 runs. A number of which were to save vehicles that should not have been on the road in the first place.

"Everyone justifies their reason for going out one way or another, but for your own safety and the safety out there - that's the reason they say 'do not go out on the roads,'” says Keith Fryback, a driver for Parker Service. “You've got plow trucks out there, you have tow trucks out there, emergency responders - ambulances, fire trucks - and the bigger equipment is harder to see around them. And they are out there trying to do a job to get the roads clear."

But if you do have to be on the road, the best thing you can do is prepare yourself.

"People need to understand that the weather's going to be bad. Carry supplies in your vehicle - a blanket, a bottle of water. It's amazing how someone slides off the road and even if you're not injured your heartrate goes up, you start to get excited. Just by having that bottle of water in your vehicle it gets rid of the tension that you got from being stuck."

We ask you again for your own safety, please stay off the roads until the travel advisory in your county is lifted.
